How one young man in Uyo turned financial hardship into independence through MEWAYZ's Direct Relief and Community Support programme.
Through persistent saving and dedicated support from MEWAYZ, Emeka was able to purchase his first adapted tricycle, unlocking a level of independence he had only dreamed of.
For many in Uyo, getting from one place to another means negotiating with okada riders, flagging down keke napep, or relying on family members willing to help. For Emeka Nwachukwu, a 29-year-old from Uyo, those options were often unavailable or unsuitable given his mobility challenges. His independence was constantly at the mercy of others — a reality that left him frustrated, isolated, and unable to pursue the opportunities he knew were within reach.
“I wanted to be able to go where I wanted, when I wanted,” Emeka says. “But buying any kind of adapted transport in Nigeria is not cheap. I had been saving for two years and still felt far from the goal. It felt like a dream out of reach.”
Living on an irregular income from occasional handcraft sales, Emeka struggled to set aside enough money without it being absorbed by day-to-day survival costs. This is where MEWAYZ COMMUNITY IMPACT FOUNDATION (MEWAYZ) stepped in. Through our Direct Relief Assistance and Community Support programmes, we worked with Emeka to structure a savings plan and supplemented it with a targeted relief grant specifically earmarked for his transport goal.
“The MEWAYZ team did not just look at the numbers; they looked at my life. They understood that this tricycle was not just a vehicle — it was my freedom.”Emeka
Over several months, Emeka saved consistently while MEWAYZ supplemented his contributions through a targeted community grant. The team guided him through the purchase process and helped identify a trusted vendor who could modify a standard tricycle to suit his needs. Last October, the milestone was reached. Emeka took possession of his adapted keke.
Today, Emeka is more active in his community than ever. He volunteers regularly at the MEWAYZ Community Centre, assists with errands for elderly neighbours, and visits family across town — journeys that would previously have required careful planning and the goodwill of others.
Emeka's story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, financial barriers do not have to stand in the way of independence. MEWAYZ is proud to have been the co-pilot on his journey.
