Growing Together: Community Farms in Akwa Ibom

Our collaboration with community groups across Akwa Ibom State has opened new doors for families to grow food, build friendships, and reclaim their sense of purpose. What started with a few garden plots has grown into something much larger.

Our collaboration with community groups and local farmers across Akwa Ibom State has opened new opportunities for vulnerable families to grow food, connect with their neighbours, and build both income and confidence. What started with a small idea to cultivate a few garden plots has blossomed into a state-wide initiative.

For many low-income families across Akwa Ibom State, access to land and farming resources has always been out of reach. Traditional small-scale farming requires upfront capital for seedlings, tools, and land access — barriers that keep families locked in poverty cycles. At MEWAYZ, we believe that the ability to grow one's own food is not a luxury but a foundation for dignity and self-reliance. That is why we launched the “Growing Together” initiative.

Sowing the Seeds of Opportunity

Earlier this year, MEWAYZ partnered with three community groups in Uyo Local Government Area. The goal was clear: create shared farming spaces where families could work side-by-side, learn practical skills, and take home produce they grew themselves. The pilot programme provided seedlings, basic farming tools, allocated land at community sites, and trained facilitators to guide participants through each growing season.

“It is about more than just tomatoes and pepper,” says a programme coordinator at the community centre. “It is about the conversations that happen while you are weeding. It is about the pride of carrying home a basket of vegetables you grew with your own hands. We are watching friendships form between families who might never have crossed paths otherwise.”

“Before this programme, I spent a lot of time at home, worrying. Now I have people waiting for me at the farm every Tuesday. We grow things together. We share what we harvest. It changes how you feel about yourself.”
— James, Program Participant

Expanding the Harvest

Following the success of the initial three sites, the “Growing Together” initiative has expanded to include five community farming locations across Uyo and Eket. MEWAYZ provides ongoing support through our Community Outreach programme, ensuring that participation remains free for qualifying families and that no household is excluded due to cost.

We are committed to this growth. By fostering these community partnerships, we are building a network of self-reliant families across Akwa Ibom State — families who grow together, share together, and lift one another up, season after season.
