How the MEWAYZ weekly community gathering in Uyo builds lasting friendships and a true sense of belonging.
For many parents, caregivers, and individuals facing hardship in Uyo, finding a space where they truly feel they belong can be a significant challenge. The MEWAYZ Community Circle was created to bridge that gap — offering a consistent, welcoming environment for social interaction and mutual support that goes beyond formal care structures.
What started as a small monthly meetup has grown into a weekly gathering that dozens of community members look forward to with genuine anticipation. Every Saturday morning, participants gather at the MEWAYZ Community Centre or a nearby outdoor space in Uyo to share stories, play ayo oware and other traditional games, eat local snacks together, and simply enjoy one another's company — without pressure or rigid structure.
“It is not just about passing time,” explains a MEWAYZ programme coordinator. “It is about building connection and confidence that translates into every part of life. We have seen participants become more vocal advocates for themselves because they practise communication here in a safe, joyful space.”
“I used to stay home most weekends. Now I have my people here. We laugh, we share food, we talk about our week. Saturday is the best day because I know I will see my friends.”
The impact of these friendships extends far beyond Saturday mornings. Members often arrange their own visits and outings during the week, support one another through personal challenges, and celebrate birthdays and family milestones together. Families across Uyo report seeing their loved ones happier, more engaged, and far less isolated.
The MEWAYZ Community Circle is a testament to the power of community. By providing the structure and support for these gatherings, MEWAYZ is helping to weave a stronger social fabric across Uyo and Akwa Ibom State, one friendship at a time. It reminds us all that connection is a fundamental human need — and that everyone deserves a place where they are known, welcomed, and valued.
