Transforming vacant lots into accessible community sanctuaries where growth happensfor plants and people alike.
The Urban Gardens Initiative is a flagship collaborative project between MEWAYZ and Green Space NY. Our mission is simple yet profound: to reclaim underutilized urban spaces globally and convert them into vibrant, fully accessible community gardens.
For individuals with developmental disabilities, these gardens serve as outdoor classrooms and therapeutic spaces. Here, participants engage in hands-on horticulture, learning the science of growth while developing patience, responsibility, and teamwork skills. The program is designed to be inclusive, ensuring that physical barriers do not prevent anyone from connecting with nature.
Beyond the therapeutic benefits, these gardens act as community hubs, fostering interaction between our participants and local residents, thereby breaking down social stigmas and building a more inclusive neighborhood culture.
Featuring raised garden beds, wide paved pathways, and adaptive tools designed specifically for individuals with mobility challenges.
Participants learn valuable skills in biology, ecology, and nutrition, alongside soft skills like planning and consistent caretaking.
Harvested vegetables and herbs are shared among participants and donated to local food pantries, enhancing food security.
A safe, welcoming environment for social interaction, reducing isolation and building lasting friendships within the community.
"Seeing the joy on a participant's face when they harvest their first tomato is indescribable. This partnership allows us to use our land expertise to make a genuine human impact."
